Saw Nay, 45, a resident of Waekhami village, Thanbyuzayat township said Infantry Battalion (IB) No. 62 ordered his village to patrol the gas pipeline for the next five months, starting in early December. “The Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Than Swe, 50, of Burmese Army IB No. 62 from Thanbyuzayat, demanded we guard the pipeline. They set up a timeline [for patrolling periods] of at least the next five months, starting from this month. He [Lt. Col Than Swe] instructed our village headmen to send two villagers every day. Those who are absent have to pay 4,000 kyat to the village headmen as sentence,” he added.

According to a HURFOM reporter in Thanbyuzayat Township, Lieutenant Colonel Than Swe’s order applied to at least eight other villages located along the Kanbauk to Myaing Kalay gas pipeline route. Affected villages include Waekhami, Anin Kyaung Way, Anin, Waewinkara, Sakhan, Taungout, Pain-Nae-Taw, Krein-Padaw and Sakhan Gyi villages.

“They [the village PDC] attached this order signed by Lieutenant Colonel Than Swe on the board in front of Village Peace and Development Council office,” said a resident of one of the affected villages. “A person from each household must provide security for the gas pipeline on a rotating basis, according to the order. The sentry duty will last the next five months, starting in this month.”

The resident added that, though most villagers have finished harvesting the paddy crop their work is not over. The rice seeds still need to be stripped from the paddy and prepared for delivery to market. People do not have the time to provide 24-hour guard for the pipeline, he said. “But who dares to complain about this unpaid job?” he added.

Most villagers seem to be planning to serve their sentry duty. “My duty will come soon. I don’t want to pay 4,000 kyat. That amount of money is enough to feed my family for two days. So, I have to go and guard the pipeline,” said Nai Akyaw, who had that no one in his village has refused to work and paid the fine for fear of ending up on the battalion’s black-list.

One of the villages included in the order, Anin village, has never been required to provide pipeline security detail. One respected community member from the village told HURFOM that he does not understand why the army is demanding villagers provide security because the pipeline is located over 4 kilometers away.

“The pipeline is far from us. The village is far from the pipeline, about 2.5 miles. So, I don’t understand why the Army forced us to guard their pipeline. We have been never forced to work of this pipeline before,” he side.

The other seven affected villages have been required to provide sentries for the pipeline in the past. “Normally every year we are forced to look after this gas pipeline for no pay,” said Nai Akyaw, 35, from another affected village. “Last year in February, we [the entire village] were required by Artillery Battallion No. 318 to take responsibility for the security of the pipeline for four months.

The Kanbauk to Myaing Kalay gas pipeline transports fuel from the Yadana gas fields in the Andaman Sea. The gas in the pipeline is for two cement factories near Pa-an Township. The gas pipeline passes through five townships in Mon State and local people have been repeatedly forced to provide security payments or stand sentry. Most recently, HURFOM reported in the second week of November HURFOM reported that at least four villages in nearby Mudon Township were required to provide similar sentry duty.

'400 Children A Day' Die In Burma

Original report : The Press Association

Hundreds of children aged under five, die from preventable diseases each day in military-ruled Burma, UN officials said.

The figures are the the second-worst mortality rate for children in Asia except for Afghanistan.

Dr Osamu Kunii, a nutrition expert in Burma for the UN, said there were between 100,000 to 150,000 child deaths per year in the country - or between 270 and 400 daily.

He was speaking at a briefing by Unicef of the presentation of its annual report - The State of the World's Children.

The mortality rate is a critical indicator of the well-being of children. About 21% of child deaths in Burma are caused by acute respiratory infection, followed by pneumonia, diarrhoea and septicaemia.

The report rated the country as having the 40th highest child mortality rate in the world. However, it said the death rate for young children in Burma had been reduced by 1.6% between 1990 and 2006.

In 2000, the World Health Organisation ranked Burma's overall health care system as the world's second worst after war-ravaged Sierra Leone.

Tens of thousands of people die each year from malaria, tuberculosis, AIDS, dysentery, diarrhoea and other illnesses.

Soldier, Soldier, Could You Please Help Me, I Have Just Been Hit By Your Truck ?

18 January 2008
Original Source : Nicknayman Blog

The second of a convoy of three army trucks, full of soldiers, hit a middle age woman near Daw Yin Wine Nursery School, Eight Mile, Rangoon. While the leading truck just drove on, the other two came to a halt in the middle of the road. None of the soldiers came out to even look at the middle-aged lady victim, much less to provide her with any aid. The driver of the second truck, who actually hit the lady, carried her to the roadside to lay her on the pavement. A Mazda 4-wheel drive(usually military vehicles) arrived about half an hour later but took no action. The injured lady's situation is not known at the time of writing.

(Burma has the second largest standing army in Asia with over 400,000 men under arms. The military consumes more than half the nation's budget and its leaders control every aspect of Burma's government. The Burmese junta are almost unique in spending the nations resources to arm 'brave' soldiers who spend their lives intimidating, abusing, violating or even killing their own people).

Junta Incapable of Managing The Power Supply

12 January 2008
Original report by Thet Naing, DVB
Translation by Nay Chi U

Ordinary civilians who live in the towns of Magwe' Division such as Pakkoku and Ye' Sagyo are suffering because the power supplies have been cut from 6 hours a day to just one night every 3 days, it is reported.

Business owners, who can't afford to buy a generator, have had their businesses come to a halt. Consequently, labourers who depend on their daily income are in deep trouble and the local factories which produce daily goods are struggling to survive.

"Snack shops need their batter mixed daily so they just have to close the shop on the days that they can't get the electricity. Small factories producing scented candles, thanaka (Burmese natural make up, made from trees)etc., all suffer too as they rely on the regular reliable power supply."

Some manufacturers who can afford generators also found that business is not profitable as the fuel prices have gone up so steeply.

"With normal power supply, our products can be sold for K 500/- each but with generator power we have to charge K1000/- for the same goods at least. We have employed workers but they are just having non-working days most of the time. Since we have a hire contract, we still have to pay them their daily fees, and we are losing a lot," said one employer.

Every other area in Burma has similar problems as the power supply 'services' have been gradually going from bad to worse, and now virtually non-existent, since the military government took over the country in 1962. The leading generals changed - from Nay Win to Khin Nyunt to now Than Shwe. Names of the ruling bodies changed - from Socialist Government to SLORC to now SPDC. However none, after all these years, has ever been able to muster the competence, to manage to supply the country with the sufficient electric power.

Journalists Telephones Switched Off (But "We" Didn't Do It!)

2 January 2008
Original report : DVB

Journalists, who reported the September's Golden Colour Revolution protests, have had their telephones switched off by the "authorities". Fixed line and mobile phones of some journalists, who work for international media firms such as NHK, GG and Reuters, as well as some employees of foreign embassies, have been switched off by the Ministry of Communications, it is reported.

When the telephone subscribers, who have paid full service fees, made enquiries at Myanmar Communication Cooperative about the censorship, they were told that it has been an order from their superiors (presumably the "authorities?"). Subsequent enquiries were made at Ministry of Communications, Post & Telegraph, Ministry of Information and Ministry of Home Affairs, and all three refused to take responsibility, just saying 'It wasn't us' ("authorities again?").

Former Military Intelligence which has the new name of Military Security Group also denied knowing anything about it, saying, 'This order is not one of our operations.'

When all the possible sources of information have run out, the owners of the telephones, who have paid over
K 1,000,000 for the service are just left empty handed , without explanation of what had happened to their telephone services.

Please Respect SPDC's Generosity

The most successful magician couldn't have done a better trick,
Look! Everyone ! We have just released,
All those people who had been in custody,
Eight thousand prisoners altogether,
No other government could have been kinder,
Or shown greater generosity.

All the ones who were serving long or short terms,
Murderers, rapists, thugs and hooligans,
Robbers , pickpockets, louts and conmen,
Fraudsters, swindlers, yobs and thieves,
You name them, we release them,
Just to prove our kindness and amnesty.

But not those who shouted out 'Dout-A-Yei' so loudly,
Or somethings like, 'freedom' and 'democracy',
Oh, No, they will all have to serve the life sentence.
We can't release them, we just can't do that,
Because it was clearly their own choice,
To stay just there,right inside.

How about earning a little favour from the Kingdom of Thailand !
Here you go, all those Thai prisoners,
Only just remember , our friend and ally,
Natural gas buyer, our biggest customer,
To kick back all those refugee beggars,
Who seem to be enjoying freedom at the border.

Oh Gosh! Yes, we do release the political prisoners too,
And the numbers are adding up to the big TWENTY, in grand total,
Just try to see how generously we do,
Goodness ! Oh, No Way !
We do not keep some pregnant ladies in jail !
That's how we show our tender love and care.
The true gentlemanlike behaviour,
Which should be officially declared.

How about the old disabled father of that monk?
Well, if we don't release him, we could be given sticks, that's for sure, ha, ha ...
Ah... Let us count quite accurately,
One, two, three, four ...hmm .. altogether it is around 0.23% , you see?
Not bad, huh ...that means ,
Two people could be released, out of a thousand, exactly.

What happened to those eight thousands released criminals?
Sure, we look after them well.
In deed, being such an honourable government,
We can't stand the unemployment.
So , here is our little scheme,
Come fill the foms for the job vacancies.
Job Title : Power Ranger,
Salary : Handsomely paid in US dollars,
Duty : Easy ! Just smash the monks' heads, who happen to be stupid walkers.

Quite certainly and most definitely,
We do need to fill the empty cells of those prisons immediately,
Why, we now have all those power rangers to take our orders,
Just get those who keep shouting 'basic human rights and freedom',
Damn bloody marchers !
As if there's nothing better to do,
Some monks' prayers for the country's peace and stability !
What the hell are they talking about?
All of them must be bloody fools.

Get everyone who dares to offer water to those parading monks,
Not to forget those who released the fish,
Or anyone who gathered for political rubbish,
Any idiot with a piece of scrap paper in hand,
Techno maniacs with mobile phones or an internet access,
And a video cam.

Just go and kick open all those front doors,
Grab anyone who wrote down anything which includes the words ' Aung' and ' San',
There is no need of the arrest paper, called 'warrant',
You do not need it , if those dimwits are watching or listening to the liars' programme,
BBC, DVB, VOA or anything that could be so stupid.
And don't forget to get those bitches,
Who watch the YOUTUBE's greatest gossip,
How dare they even try to look at ,
Those stolen diamonds of our number one's favourite kid.

Go on, stuff all those animals in prison, and be quick,
How dare they think they could even dream of the treason!
Just give them some bloody good lessons,
So as to teach others, never repeating.
Do they think we call ourselves SPDC/Junta for nothing?
All these chest medals we are wearing,
Were given to us by the man himself, the devil king,
To commemorate our work,
Which has been so outstanding.

Oh, Yes, we have also done the training in acting,
Which we passed with colours and they are all flying,
If you really want to be the world's famous leaders,
You do need to look pretty cheerful , kind and generous ,
Just like the Hollywood actors.

We will have to go to hell for doing this?
What nonsense!
To be frank, hell is a long way after your death,
And while we are just here, right now,
It is far more important ,
To be wealthy and powerful at present.

We just say Pooh! Pooh!,
To the word 'embarrassment' too,
There is nothing to be ashamed of,
Providing we can be imperious and well-off.
There is never a bone in the tongue,
So when that boneless tongue has a lttle slip,
A flea could easily become a tortoise,
And a nuclear reactor might well be a cooking pot,
Believe it or not.

Just go butcher all those monks, young and old,
Students? Just stuff them all in the cells,
And don't worry about separating male, female things.
Senior or junior, as long as they call themselves politicians,
Just stick them all in.
NLD loves prisons anyway,
Insein jail is their biggest branch , didn't you know?
8888 students seem to be quite attached to that torture chamber too,
What a lot of weird souls !

Hmm... Let us do a bit of calculation,
Eight thousands out, so if we just squash all that hundred thousands back in,
Oh yeh, there will be just enough room for that.
And please do go and visit them there , UN inspector or whatever,
Look this is what we offer them,
A mouth watering rice and curry.
Don't forget to look at all those shiny brand-new kitchen utensils too,
Just make a little note that we provide them with the best possible facilities.

What happened after the inspection?
Uh.. Well.. the thing is, , that cooking oil container seemed to have run away,
Where ? Oh just to the prison official's kitchen, wasn't it so funny?
Sorry, pardon me, but did you say, the prisoners look all very thin?
Haven't you heard that it is fashionable to be slim and trim?
Oh, Help! Our Hell King!
We are just trying to do the best for them,
And all that we've ever got is complaints, and criticisms.
Why don't you sometimes practice your human rights study,
And learn to appreciate our benevolent kindness and compassionate mercy?

There is a leak only because the roof has a hole !
If we must tell you the truth,
Actually, yeh, we made that ginormous hole up in the roof,
With the hope that it would provide us with the continuous rain water,
And guess what ?
It's worked so well that we never want to move.

Looking like the most sinuous and complex network of passages,
However there are only a few directions to reach the destination,
To consolidate this long surviving military empire's sovereignty,
There has to be utmost defence and the extreme protection,
With the greatest possible prevention.

Ignore if the entire country is being destroyed,
Nevermind if its relegion is annihilated and ruined,
We don't care if our grand children will not be able to enter the monkhood as tradition,
We don't even give it a s_ _ t,
If nobody comes to our funerals and no monks there to perform the blessings and prayers service,
As long as we are powerful, puissant, prevalent and rich.
