ILO Informer's Family Targeted As Authorities Took Revenge

Major Ye' Naing, Manager, Sugar Factory No 5, Aung Lan

Ye' Naing stole about 2000 acres from local farmers and forced them to plant sugarcane. The farmers were led by Ko Zaw Htay, who organized the signature petition and reported the case to ILO, the International Labour Organization in 2008.

Aung Lan District Court

Zaw Htay was given 10 years sentence.

Magwe' State Court

Ko Po Pyu, the lawyer of Zaw Htay was given 4 years imprisonment. He was later transferred to Thayet prison.

The Cotton Garment Factory, Pwint Pyu

In February 2009, Miss Khin Than Oo, sister of Zaw Htay, was ordered to leave this factory where she was working, and forced to move to Thar Paung, Irrawaddy.

Aung Thein Myint, Manager, Cement Factory, Thayet

On February 2, Aung Thein Myint ordered U Aung Myint, brother of Zaw Htay , who worked at the Machinery Department in this factory, to move to Pathein (Basein) Factory, without any explanation. On February 4, the manager issued another order for Aung Myint to move to Hakka, Chin State, instead.

No transfer allowance was given to Aung Myint, who has a family in Thayet. He is now doing casual work to support his family, who lost their accommodation.

On May 5, the brother-in-law of Zaw Htay, who allowed the homeless family members to stay with him, was warned by Aung Thein Myint that he could be sacked and prosecuted.
